Excessive amount of gums can make someone feel less attractive and unwilling to smile. There are several possible causes of a gummy smile, including the abnormal eruption of the teeth – teeth are covered by excessive gum tissue appear short. Although the teeth may look short, usually they’re just hidden by the gums.
Another cause is that the muscle that controls the movement of your upper lip could be causing your lip to rise higher than normal. When this occurs, more of your gum tissue is exposed when you smile. The way your upper jaw bone grew and developed as a child, could also be the cause of the appearance of a gummy smile. For example, if there was an excessive bulging protrusion of the upper jaw, you would experience an obvious gummy appearance when you smile.
Gum reduction surgery is available and treatments include gum contouring (gum lift), orthodontics (teeth straightening) or using pink porcelain. Gum contouring is a technique that involves the removal of excessive gum to create the correct length to width ratio of the teeth to produce a correct smile line.
This lady disliked the shape, position and colour of her teeth, and the fact that she showed so much gum when she smiled. She refused orthodontic treatment and opted instead for minimal prep veneers. We lengthened the teeth with some minor gum surgery and placed some minimal prep veneers to give a beautiful result.
